A Jewish Divorce Dispute Leads to Protest

Ahron Friedman civilly divorced his wife in April. Friedman, an orthodox Jew, refuses to give his wife, Tamar Epstein, a Jewish decree of divorce. According to Jewish law, a get is something only a husband can give. Unless a get is given, the couple is still considered married according to Jewish law. In addition, without a get, neither he nor his wife can remarry within the faith. A chain woman or an agunah is the way Tamar Epstein lives within her faith, until she receives a get from her husband. Most of us may not understand religious martial laws, as we are free to marry and legally divorce anyone as we see fit. It is estimated there are several hundred agunot in the United States today, due to get disputes. Freidman’s refusal to unchain or release his wife from their Jewish marriage resulted in a secular protest outside of his apartment and his place of employment. YouTube videos showed protestors including religious women with their heads covered, men in traditional skullcaps and rabbis. Important rabbis who are also pressuring him to do what they see as the right thing condemn Freidman. Ahron and Tamar married on April 23, 2006. A…

Michigan Man Faces Chagres for Reading Wife’s Emails

A Michigan man, Leon Walker, is facing up to five years in prison for accessing his wife’s email without her consent. State prosecutors say Walker violated a state law that prohibits unauthorized computer access in order to “acquire, alter, damage, delete or destroy property.” This law intended to punish identity thieves and not curious spouses, something lawmakers never thought would happen. Clara Walker kept all of her internet passwords in an address book next to the home laptop. Leon Walker accessed her Google email account using those unprotected passwords, as he believed that Clara was having an affair. The emails he found confirmed that his wife was having an affair with one of her former husbands, a man who faced arrested in the past for beating her in front of her young son. Walker was reportedly worried that the man might be abusive again, especially around his daughter and stepson. He handed copied of the emails to his stepson’s father, who filed for an emergency request for custody. Clara found out about her husband’s snooping during her custody dispute. Prosecutors state Walker broke the law while Walker maintains he was within his rights as the computer was a martial asset….

Madoff Investor Plans to Sue Ex-Wife Over $2.7 Million Divorce Accord

Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme ruined many lives and may be the reason behind Madoff’s son’s suicide. It is unfortunate that personal lives of investors were and still are affected. Steven Simkin, a New York law firm partner, believed he settled his divorce, which included the purported value of his investment account with Bernard Madoff. When the details of Madoff’s scheme became known, Simkin realized he may have lost even more and requested his 2006 divorce agreement adjusted. Steven Simkin wants to sue his ex-wife, Laura Blank, over $2.7 million divorce accord, citing the doctrines of “mutual mistake” and “unjust enrichment.” The state’s Appellate Division ruled that the law firm partner could indeed sue. A big part of the issue for the appeal was the theory of existence of the account because of Madoff’s scheme. Simkin stated in his filings that he and his ex-wife believed they owned an account with Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, which was the couple’s largest asset valued at $5.4 million. Simkin paid Blank $6.6 million and $2.7 was attributable to the investment account. Simkin wants restitution. Bank’s divorce lawyer called the decision by the appellate court “completely erroneous” and vowed to take the case…
