Paonia Divorce Turns Deadly

Yet another divorce has turned tragic. A Paonia, Colorado man is in custody of Delta County authorities after he turned himself in. Nathan Yager, 39, stands accused in his estranged wife’s death. Police have not released the victim’s name.

According to local police, around 1 PM Friday an officer responded on a trespassing call. A witness then notified the office of a homicide. The witness is friends with the female victim. The responding office found a woman in her late 30s dead near the couple’s home.

Yager’s name was on the couple’s home deed, although he had lived somewhere else in Paonia. The couple was in the process of divorce, a difficult situation for any couple, but the domestic situation escalated to violence. No restraining order was on file, according to police. The suspect was briefly on the loose and traveled from Paonia to Montrose. Officers with the Colorado State Patrol met him en route at which time Yager turned himself in to face allegations.

It is still unclear what escalated this divorce situation into a tragic event and loss of life. According to reports, the two have a history of relationship problems, which is what lead to their initial separation.
