Man Unfriends First Wife on Facebook, Faces Polygamy Charges

According to Albuquerque Express, Richard Leon Barton unfriended his wife on Facebook and the whole world noticed that he was a polygamist – landing him in a lot of legal trouble. Barton skipped out on his first wife, a Rhode Island resident, but still managed to stay friends with her on the social network site. The wife became suspicious when she noticed Barton removed her as a friend of his on Facebook. She poked around and found wedding photos of Barton and his new wife on the website. Facebook and other social network websites are usually blamed for ending marriages and affairs. While this is certainly an end of another marriage, it is a beginning of a new, but unlawful, one as well. Studies have found a recent trend of Facebook-related divorces. Some divorce lawyers have gone as far as including Facebook pages and conversations as evidence in court cases. Divorce Rates Increase in Rural America

According to Los Angeles Times, divorce, once rare in rural America, is becoming more common. In the 1970s, the rate of divorce in rural areas looked like the rest of America in the 1910s. Due to society changes, divorce rates in metro areas and non-metro areas are essentially the same. Iowa County has 28,000 residents, mostly churchgoers, and previously divorce was simply not done in the area. However, with more women in the work force and a bit of modernity, the area’s been swept up by divorce by nearly sevenfold since 1970. Census data shows that divorce rate is still less than the national average but has had a sharp incline which indicates a fundamental change in the patterns of family life. Rural families appear to be going through an incredible fundamental transformation, according a sociology professor at Cornell University. Women are going to work, autonomy is growing and it has re-arranged the order of traditional families. With changing values the stigma of divorce is easing. It appears that rates of divorce have changed in households with only a high school diploma. In areas such as Sioux County previous data showed that high school sweethearts were more likely to remain…

Frank McCourt Dodges Divorce Dispute Questions

According to ESPN, embattled Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt avoided media questions about his divorce proceedings in his first interview Friday since the start of spring training. McCourt was granted a divorce from Jamie, but the former couple’s final divorce settlement includes resolving the dispute of who owns the LA Dodgers. McCourt declined to comment on the Dodger’s unsettled ownership issues. Instead, he said the charity game was a place to discuss the victims of the January 8 Tucson shooting and how to raise funds in the memory of the victims for the families and the community. McCourt said that discussing his divorce and legal proceedings would be a disrespectful thing to do during the charity baseball event. McCourt promised to address the ownership situation at a later date. His attorneys are engaged in settlement discussions with his ex-wife, aimed at resolving the ownership situation and other divorce matters. If the parties do not reach a settlement, the court will be left to decide whether the team should be considered community property. The dispute has caused a serious financial concern to the franchise, with some doubting that McCourt can hold on to the team for a long haul. The…
