Study Finds Young Couples More Likely To Divorce

According to Mid-Day, recent figures released by a national statistics study, show approximately 10.5 people out of every 1,000 married got a divorce in the last year. That number is down from 11.8 people back in 2008.

That rate doubles when looking at people aged 25 to 29. 21.7 men out of every 1,000 and 25.1 women out of every 1,000 divorced in 2009.

“Starter marriages” may be to blame, according to experts. “Starter marriages” are marriages that end within 5 years and did not produce any children.

Head of policy at Relate, Jenny North, stated that today’s society does not view divorce as a “cataclysmic event.”

The overall number of marriages that ended in divorce fell to it’s lowest level in 35 years. Divorce is at its lowest since the 1970s, with only 113,949 divorces occurring in the last year, a significant drop of 6.4 percent.

However, it should be noted that the drop in divorce may be partially because couples today do not immediately jump on the marriage bandwagon; and therefore those who do choose to marry are more likely to stay together for the long term.

Experts add that tough economic times may also have added to the dip in the divorce rate.
