Residency Requirements Prevent Divorce for Cancer Patient

A couple seeking a divorce in New Zealand is facing a difficult time having the courts recognize their desire to split up. Similar problems occur in the United States, where divorce and residency requirements vary from state to state. Texas, for example, requires that at least one spouse be a resident of the state for 180 days before able to file for divorce. Whether domestically or internationally, spouses who travel face difficult decisions when filing for divorce and deciding child custody. The New Zealand man, Dave Feickert, attempted to file for divorce from his wife in February of this year. She is the British author Marina Lewycka who has won awards for her books, which include “A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian” and “Two Caravans.” The couple has been married since 1987. He lives in Beijing with a different woman, while Lewycka’s work has her traveling all over the world. Adding to the couple’s strains is the fact that Feickert has a terminal form of cancer and has been fighting it for six years. In May, doctors told him he may just have a few years left. The New Zealand court has refused to grant the divorce because it…

Custody of 3-Year-Old Goes to Sex Offender

A child custody battle in Florida has outraged many over the court’s decision. 3-year-old Miranda has lived with her grandmother for all of her life so far. The little girl’s mother died about a month after Miranda was born. The problem is that, at the time Miranda was born, her mother was married to Donald Coleman, a registered sex offender. Coleman’s criminal history also includes domestic violence and aggravated assault. He pled guilty to a sexual offense in 1997. Miranda’s family knows, and Coleman agrees, that Coleman is not Miranda’s biological father. But, because Coleman and Miranda’s mother were married at the time of Miranda’s birth, Coleman is still the girl’s legal father. Coleman and Miranda’s mother were actually in the middle of divorcing at the time of Miranda’s birth, but the divorce did not come soon enough. Adding to the complexity of the case are details about Miranda’s grandmother, Rita Manning. In 1995, authorities charged Manning (but they later dropped the charges) with contributing to the delinquency of a child. In 1997, Manning got probation for child neglect. Around the same time, Manning’s daughter (Miranda’s mother) became pregnant at the age of 14 by Coleman. Coleman was 38-years-old at…

J. Lo to Divorce Again, But Still Battling First Husband

Jennifer Lopez appeared to have settled down after she and Ben Affleck ended their high profile relationship in 2004. Shortly afterwards, Lopez began dating Marc Anthony, whom she had dated in the late 1990s and with whom she had remained friends. The two hit it off immediately, and she and Anthony married in 2004. The couple had fraternal twins together in 2008. Just a few weeks ago, though, they announced that they had decided to divorce. Hopefully for Lopez, the divorce and financial settlement go smoother than it did for her first marriage and divorce. In February 1997, Lopez married Ojani Noa, a Cuban man whom she met while working as a waitress in Miami. The two divorced 11 months later in January of 1998, but Lopez continues to find herself embroiled in legal battles with her first ex-husband. Lopez hired Noa in 2002 to manage a restaurant that she owned. She fired him later that year, he filed a lawsuit as a result, and the two reached a confidential settlement agreement. In 2006, Lopez sued Noa to stop his publishing a book containing personal details about their brief marriage. She received over half a million dollars in damages and…

Olivia Wilde Divorces Italian Prince, Enjoys Being Single

Known as Maxim’s “Hottest Woman Alive” in 2009 and for her starring roles in “Tron: Legacy” and the Fox series “House,” actress Olivia Wilde married an Italian prince when she was just 19 years old in 2003. Now at 27, Wilde split from her husband Tao Ruspoli earlier in the year in February. The break up has been difficult for Wilde, but she credits it with improving her acting and making her a better person. In an interview, Wilde described the divorce process as “humbling,” but was optimistic about coming out of the experience a better person. Because she married at a young age and spent most of her twenties married, she commented that she was a bit of a “case of arrested development.” Newly single, she looks forward to being able to spend time by herself and improve on her independence. The crew on “House” seems to think the experience has improved her acting, at least. The show’s creator said that Wilde she get divorced more often, as her acting abilities have benefited from what the divorce has taught her about people and relationships. Tabloids have linked Wilde to other celebrities like Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake,…
