Custody of 3-Year-Old Goes to Sex Offender

A child custody battle in Florida has outraged many over the court’s decision. 3-year-old Miranda has lived with her grandmother for all of her life so far. The little girl’s mother died about a month after Miranda was born. The problem is that, at the time Miranda was born, her mother was married to Donald Coleman, a registered sex offender.

Coleman’s criminal history also includes domestic violence and aggravated assault. He pled guilty to a sexual offense in 1997. Miranda’s family knows, and Coleman agrees, that Coleman is not Miranda’s biological father. But, because Coleman and Miranda’s mother were married at the time of Miranda’s birth, Coleman is still the girl’s legal father. Coleman and Miranda’s mother were actually in the middle of divorcing at the time of Miranda’s birth, but the divorce did not come soon enough.

Adding to the complexity of the case are details about Miranda’s grandmother, Rita Manning. In 1995, authorities charged Manning (but they later dropped the charges) with contributing to the delinquency of a child. In 1997, Manning got probation for child neglect. Around the same time, Manning’s daughter (Miranda’s mother) became pregnant at the age of 14 by Coleman. Coleman was 38-years-old at the time, which is why he has to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Miranda’s biological father and other family members are fighting the court’s decision to grant custody to Coleman. Protestors have marched in front of the local courthouse where the judge made the decision.
