J. Lo Will Lose a Lot if There was No Prenup

We are not yet sure whether Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony signed a prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage. There have been conflicting media reports, with some claiming that the couple did have one, others saying otherwise. The couple has been together since 2004, before deciding to divorce in mid-July of this year.

Some figure that Lopez must have insisted on a prenup given that she has been married and divorced before. In fact, she still faces legal troubles with her first husband from the 1990s. It probably would have been a good idea for Lopez to have worked out a prenup given the extent of her wealth and possession.

While both are rich celebrities, Lopez is worth several times more than Anthony is. Altogether, her empire totals around $150 million, and she earned $25 million last year. A good portion of that $25 million came from her role on American Idol. Anthony is reportedly worth around $40 million and earns in the neighborhood of $10 million a year.

The two are divorcing in California, which, like Texas, is part of just a handful of community property states in the country. This means if Lopez and Anthony do not have a prenup agreement, a court will be looking to split their assets right down the middle. When the disparity between the spouses is great, the spouse with more assets ends up losing the most. Lopez stands to have her fortune halved, but she could have easily prevented it with a little foresight. Would a prenuptial agreement have been advisable in this case?
