Most Expensive Divorce in French History Forthcoming

It has been a big year for expensive divorces throughout the world. We have seen expensive payouts in settlements between celebrity couples like Mel Gibson and his girlfriend Oksana, Kelsey and Camille Grammar here in the United States, and between wealthy couples in the United Kingdom. France is yet another country that is set to see its most expensive divorce settlement ever.

The divorce in France is occurring between the Aga Khan – a billionaire and Muslim spiritual leader – and Gabriele Thyssen who is a German princess. The two married in 1998 and had a son together. This is the second marriage for both. The Aga Khan was married for 25 years to a model with whom he had three children. They divorced in 1995. Thyssen was married to an Italian prince from 1991 to 1998.

A French appeals court just determined that Aga Khan was at fault for the end of the couple’s marriage. As a result, it overturned the ruling from a lower court, which had determined that both sides were at fault and that Thyssen should receive 12 million euros (just over $16 million). Instead, the appeals court gave Thyssen between $76 and $92 million.

How much do you think fault should play a role in a divorce settlement? Our Houston divorce attorneys encourage you to leave your thoughts after the post.
